About this role: Gruntwork is hiring a senior Golang engineer to focus specifically on Open Source projects, primarily OpenTofu but also other open source tools at Gruntwork. * Work collaboratively with the open source community to design and implement innovative new features at the frontier of DevOps tooling * Help maintain and improve the quality of our codebases, infrastructure, and documentation * Review and provide feedback on pull requests from the community and team members This is a contractor position, paid based on an hourly rate. We expect an average of 25-35 hours of work per week up to 35 hours (based on your availability and skill level) however, you have the ability to control when you work (assuming you coordinate this with your colleagues on the OpenTofu development team). Although you would start as a contractor, this role sets up a path to full-time employment with Gruntwork when future positions open up, if that’s of interest to you. You can work with stakeholders to define features, plan work, and ship according to plan. * Is productive. You are comfortable working with a team of remote engineers, and are able to break down problems and solutions so that they can be addressed in highly visible, manageable chunks of work. * Is good at testing well. You know how to balance speed and coverage in the tests you write, and you design software with testability in mind. * Is good at using AI well. You understand the complexities of how and when AI-assisted tooling should be used in the development process. You are comfortable using AI (e.g. using Claude, Codex, Cursor, Copilot, etc.) to investigate, generate and troubleshoot code. The OpenTofu project specifically does not allow AI usage at the moment, but will likely allow for limited AI usage through GitHub Copilot in the near future. About your time zone: One of our values is that work-life balance leads to both better work and a better life, so we require that all our team members live in a time zone between Los Angeles and New York, inclusive. You can be located anywhere in the western hemisphere, though most of our team is in the USA and Canada. Our interview process: After you apply for this role, here's the process we'll go through to evaluate a mutual fit. As this role is closely linked with the OpenTofu community project, the OpenTofu core development team will be involved in the technical phases of this interview process. 1. Phone screen. We'll do a quick phone screen to assess a general fit. We’ll also ask for references we can follow-up with to learn more about you. 2. Values screen. We’ll do a quick phone call to assess alignment with Gruntwork values. 3. Technical interview. We'll talk shop with you to see if we're on the same page about the technical requirements for the role. 4. OpenTofu technical interview. A deeper technical interview driven by the OpenTofu development team, specifically as it pertains to OpenTofu development. 5. Trial Day.
