These teams own our centralized product data platform, publishing and click-tracking infrastructure, partner ingestion pipelines, GraphQL gateway operations, and high-traffic headless CMS ecosystem. Their work ensures fast, reliable, secure, and high-performing experiences across NerdWallet’s web and mobile products. As AI continues to reshape how software is built and operated, we’re evolving how our engineering teams work. Our Platform Engineering organization is investing in AI-assisted development workflows, intelligent automation, and modern operational practices that improve developer productivity, accelerate delivery, and strengthen engineering quality at scale. We’re looking for a Senior Engineering Manager, Platform Engineering to lead engineering teams through this next phase of modernization and growth. This role is ideal for a leader who is energized by transformation, excited to leverage AI to improve engineering effectiveness, and passionate about building high-performing, collaborative teams. You’ll guide the evolution of legacy systems into scalable, resilient platforms while helping shape the future of engineering practices at NerdWallet. You’ll partner closely with Product and cross-functional stakeholders to drive execution, improve operational excellence, and create an environment where teams can move quickly, experiment thoughtfully, and deliver meaningful impact for consumers. Success in this role requires strong technical judgment, people leadership, and the ability to balance innovation with reliability, security, and long-term maintainability. You’ll mentor engineers, support thoughtful decision-making, and help foster a culture grounded in ownership, continuous learning, collaboration, and informed risk-taking. This role reports to the Director, Engineering for the Consumer Knowledge Distribution Team. WHERE YOU CAN MAKE AN IMPACT: * Lead, coach, and develop an engineering team responsible for NerdWallet’s platform systems, including the Content Platform, CMS, and Product Data Platform * Drive the evolution of engineering workflows through thoughtful adoption of AI-assisted development practices, automation, and operational tooling * Partner with Product Managers and other cross-functional stakeholders to plan, prioritize, and execute against the product roadmap * Champion process improvements that increase engineering velocity, efficiency, and developer experience while maintaining high standards for quality and reliability * Drive consistent execution of software development best practices, including code quality, testing, documentation, and operational excellence * Contribute to and guide technical and architectural decisions, ensuring solutions are scalable, reliable, secure, and compliant with regulatory requirements * Balance platform evolution (e.g., headless CMS, APIs, content workflows) with stability for high-traffic, mission critical systems * Manage sprint planning, project timelines, and delivery commitments, ensuring predictable and high-quality execution * Identify technical risks, dependencies, and delivery challenges, escalating and addressing them proactively * Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, continuous improvement, and psychological safety * Support hiring, onboarding, performance management, and career development for engineers at varying levels * Ensure systems owned by the team meet availability, performance, and security standards YOUR EXPERIENCE: * 8+ years of relevant software engineering experience * 5+ years of experience as the people manager of an engineering team * Proven experience delivering production software in a complex, fast-paced environment within FinTech or regulated industries * Proven success owning and leading large-scale content management systems and headless architectures (our current platform is built on WordPress) * Proven success leading large scale backend systems * Strong understanding of the software development life cycle, agile methodologies, and modern engineering practices * Solid technical foundation with experience designing and building scalable, reliable, and secure systems * Proficient in either PHP or Python, GraphQL, SQL, and TypeScript * Working knowledge of security best practices, data privacy, and compliance considerations in financial systems * Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, and support engineers at varying levels through clear, actionable feedback * Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical partners * Experience balancing delivery commitments with technical quality and long-term maintainability * Experience in developing scalable web applications with SEO in mind * Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, with a proven ability to manage and deliver complex engineering projects at scale and on time * A passion for mentorship, cross-functional collaboration, and creating inclusive, high-performing teams WHERE: * This is a remote position and a person can be located anywhere in Canada (with the exception of Quebec). * NerdWallet is proud to be a remote-first company!
