Nurse Resume Example: What Hiring Managers Want in 2026

Nursing is task-heavy. Your resume shouldn't be. A full nurse resume example with the bullet rewrites and skills that get you callbacks.

Nurse resume example: resume document with stethoscope and medical icons

Nursing is one of the most task-driven professions. You assess patients, administer medications, monitor vitals, coordinate care, document everything, and do it all under pressure for 12-hour shifts. The problem: listing tasks on a resume is exactly what doesn't work in 2026.

“I've been a Registered Nurse for over 30 years and I'm having difficulty updating my resume. Honestly, nursing is very task-based. My primary focus is giving 150% to my patient.”

🗣️u/Lyn909·r/resumes

That frustration is real. But nurse hiring managers are still looking for impact, not just duties. "Provided patient care in ICU" describes the job. "Managed care for 6 critical patients per shift with 99% medication accuracy" describes how well you did it. BLS projects 6% growth for registered nurses through 2032 (177,400 new openings). The jobs are there. The resume needs to show you're the right hire.

What Makes a Strong Nursing Resume

The example above works because every bullet has scope and impact, not just tasks. A few things to notice:

  • Patient ratios are included (4-6 ICU, 5-7 Med-Surg). This tells the hiring manager your workload capacity instantly.
  • Certifications are listed separately and completely. ACLS, PALS, BLS are ATS keywords that get scanned before a human reads anything.
  • Numbers everywhere: 99.2% accuracy, 15,000+ administrations, 40% infection reduction, 8 new grads trained, 30-bed unit, 96% satisfaction.
  • EHR system named (Epic). Most hospitals use Epic or Cerner. Naming the one you know is a keyword match.
  • Summary leads with specialty, years, and certifications. The hiring manager knows in 5 seconds whether you're worth reading further.

“Don't just say you provided patient care. Show what happened because of how you provided it. Numbers quantify impact that otherwise gets drowned out.”

Skills to Put on a Nursing Resume

Split into clinical skills (ATS keywords) and soft skills (for bullet points, not the skills section).

Clinical / Hard Skills (put in Skills section)Interpersonal Skills (prove in bullet points)
Epic / Cerner / Meditech EHRPatient communication and education
Ventilator managementMultidisciplinary team collaboration
IV therapy and central line careCritical thinking under pressure
Hemodynamic monitoringDe-escalation and crisis management
Wound care and assessmentMentoring and precepting
Medication administrationTime management (high patient ratios)
Code Blue / Rapid ResponseCultural sensitivity and empathy
Telemetry monitoringCharge nurse / leadership
Patient triage (ER)Advocating for patient needs

The left column goes in your Skills section as-is. These are the terms ATS scans for. The right column goes into your bullet points as demonstrated actions, not as listed skills. "Cultural sensitivity" as a skill listing means nothing. "Provided culturally adapted care instructions in English and Mandarin for 200+ patients annually" means something.

General guide on skills: skills to put on a resume.

Nurse Resume Bullet Points: Before and After

Before (Task)After (Achievement)
Administered medications to patientsAdministered 50+ medications per shift with 99% accuracy across cardiac, respiratory, and post-op patients
Educated patients on discharge instructionsDeveloped simplified discharge instruction sheets for cardiac patients, reducing 30-day readmission rate by 12%
Worked in a team environmentCoordinated with physicians, pharmacy, and respiratory therapy to create care plans for 6 ICU patients per shift
Maintained patient recordsDocumented patient assessments, interventions, and outcomes in Epic EHR for 5-7 patients per shift, maintaining 100% charting compliance during audits
Supervised new nursesPrecepted 8 new graduate nurses through 12-week ICU orientation, with 7 of 8 passing competency evaluations on first attempt
Responded to emergenciesServed on rapid response team, responding to 3-5 codes per month. Initiated CPR and ACLS protocols resulting in successful resuscitation in 85% of cases

Same nurse. Same 12-hour shifts. The only difference is how the work is described. Patient counts, accuracy rates, outcomes, and named systems turn a job description into a hiring argument.

FAQ

Should a nurse resume be one page or two?
One page for under 10 years of experience. Two pages if you have 10+ years, multiple specialties, or extensive certifications. New grads should stay at one page. Most nurse hiring managers prefer concise resumes because they review dozens of applications for each posting.
Do I need a BSN on my resume if I have an ADN?
List whatever degree you have. If you're currently pursuing your BSN, add it: "BSN in progress, expected 2027." Many hospitals now require or prefer BSN (Magnet hospitals require 80% BSN), so noting your progress shows commitment.
What certifications should I list?
All of them. BLS, ACLS, PALS, TNCC, CCRN, CEN, whatever you hold. List them in a dedicated Certifications section, not buried in bullet points. These are high-priority ATS keywords. Include expiration dates if they're current; omit expired ones unless you plan to renew.
How do I write a nursing resume with no experience as a new grad?
Lead with your clinical rotations as experience entries: facility name, unit, hours, and patient population. Include skills from clinicals (IV starts, Foley insertion, EHR charting). Add any capstone projects, research, or leadership roles from nursing school. 12 weeks of ICU clinical rotation is experience.

Pair the resume with a matching cover letter: nurse cover letter examples by situation (new grad, LPN-to-RN, return-to-work, travel-to-permanent).

Build your nursing resume with the right format and keywords. Mirrai's Resume Builder creates ATS-compatible resumes tailored to the job description. Upload your experience and export a clean PDF in minutes.
