This role is structured around ownership of property tax, sales & use tax, and other non-income tax workstreams, including abatement negotiations, appeals, and controversy management across the development pipeline, construction portfolio, and operating fleet. Reporting to Eric Huswick, VP, Finance, the Senior Director, Indirect Tax will serve as the primary indirect tax advisor to Development, Investment, Project Finance, Accounting, and Legal. This role is based at Arevon’s Scottsdale, AZ headquarters. Expect approximately 5-10% travel to project sites, county/state taxing jurisdictions, and Arevon offices, as needed to support appeals, hearings, and team collaboration. Key Responsibilities Property Tax Strategy & Controversy * Own Arevon’s enterprise-wide property tax strategy, including annual rendition filings, valuation review, and bill payment oversight across the operating and development portfolio. * Lead property tax appeals and controversy matters at the county and state level, including managing outside counsel/consultants, negotiating settlements, and directing appeal strategy on high-value assessments. * Direct the negotiation and structuring of state and local incentive arrangements, including Payment in Lieu of Tax (PILOT) agreements, Industrial Revenue Bonds (IRBs), High Impact Business (HIB) designations, and Economic/Enterprise Zone abatements. * Oversee due diligence on property tax positions for M&A, greenfield development, and financing transactions, and ensure property tax assumptions are accurately reflected in project and corporate financial models. Sales, Use & Other Indirect Tax * Direct sales and use tax compliance strategy for procurement entities and operating projects, including determination of taxability on equipment and services acquisitions. * Own transfer tax and other ad hoc transactional indirect tax matters arising from acquisitions, financings, and corporate restructurings. * Partner with Procurement and Legal on sales tax planning opportunities and risk mitigation and maintain Arevon’s indirect tax roadmap as the first-stop resource for internal indirect tax guidance. * Manage state and local indirect tax audits, including responding to information requests and coordinating with external advisors. Team Leadership & Cross-Functional Partnership * Manage, mentor, and develop the indirect tax team members, building bench strength as the portfolio scales. * Serve as the primary indirect tax advisor to Investment, Project Finance, and Development teams on tax assumptions for prospective acquisitions and greenfield projects. * Work across Arevon functions to optimize internal structure for property, sales, and other state and local taxes and incentives. * Manage third-party provider relationships for outsourced indirect tax compliance and specialized technical support. Modeling & Process Improvement * Maintain and update indirect tax assumptions within corporate FP&A and project-level financial models. * Drive process improvement, documentation, and automation of indirect tax workpapers, trackers, and compliance calendars. * Review new and amended LLC agreements and other legal documents for indirect tax implications of investments. Required Qualifications * Bachelor’s degree in Accountancy or related field; other fields accepted if combined with a J.D. * 10+ years of progressive tax experience with substantial depth in property tax and multi-state sales/use tax matters, including direct experience with appeals, abatements, and controversy management. * Prior people management experience, with a demonstrated ability to build and develop a team. * Proven track record negotiating tax abatements/incentives and reviewing financial models for tax assumptions. * Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills, with the ability to work cross-functionally and represent Arevon before external stakeholders (taxing authorities, counsel, consultants). * Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Preferred Qualifications * CPA license or JD. * Experience in renewable energy or another capital-intensive, project-based industry. * Experience implementing and maintaining indirect tax processes and internal controls. * Experience with Oracle NetSuite or other ERP systems.
